Papers, 1855-1865.

Correspondence between Philo Chapman and his wife and other relatives, three diaries (two by Philo and one by Sarah), maps and sketches, genealogical material and miscellaneous documents by Philo. A photocopy of the typescript transcription of the letters and diaries and family history materials by Mary Jane Sanadi is also included. The maps and sketches illustrate various battles, campaigns and locations associated with the war including the Battle of Shiloh, the Battle of Hatchie, the Vicksburg campaign, and Andersonville, Ga.

Philo J. Chapman served as a drummer for Company G of the Iowa Volunteer Infantry, 3rd Regiment from 1861 until his death in the Andersonville Prison in 1864. Prior to and throughout the war he corresponded with his wife, Sarah Florence, of Indianola, Iowa. Sarah remarried after Philo's death and was active in the Woman's Christian Temperance Union. Temperance organization founded in Cleveland, Ohio in 1874. Campaigning against the use of alcohol and in favor of labor laws and prison reform, the W.C.T.U. became one of the largest and most influential women's organizations of the 19th century. It became global when the World W.C.T.U. was founded in 1883.
